3 Healthy Reasons Why Hydrogen Water Is Worth Trying Out

Plain regular water remains the best and healthiest choice to stay hydrated and quench your thirst. However, an increasing number of companies claim that enhanced drinking water introduces a slew of health benefits. One such variation of this is hydrogen-infused water, which aims to combat the basis of all illnesses and ageing—inflammation and oxidation stress. Get to know the science behind hydrogen water and the health benefits that make it worth a try.

What Is Hydrogen Water?

Hydrogen water is essentially pure drinking water with additional hydrogen molecules made via electrolysis in water purifier/dispensers and hydrogen tablets. Hydrogen is an odourless, colourless, non-toxic gas that binds to other chemical elements such as nitrogen, carbon, and oxygen to form compounds like water and table sugar. As a refresher, water (chemical formula H20) consists of two hydrogens and one oxygen atom. More and more people claim that infusing plain drinking water with extra hydrogen molecules delivers health benefits that regular water simply cannot.

The reasoning behind these benefits is that the human body cannot effectively use the hydrogen in water since they are bound to oxygen. When these extra hydrogen molecules are added, they are inherently “free” and more accessible by the body.

Benefits of Hydrogen Water

Although there have only been limited human studies on the health benefits of hydrogen water, the few small trials conducted have revealed promising results.

1. It may benefit people with metabolic syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is a health condition characterised by high cholesterol, high blood sugar, high triglyceride levels, and excess belly fat, with chronic inflammation suspected to be the main contributing factor. Several research findings have revealed that hydrogen water could prove effective at improving the risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome and mitigating the markers of oxidative stress.

In a 10-week study, 20 participants with signs of metabolic syndrome were instructed to drink approximately 1 litre of hydrogen-infused water daily, and by the end of the trial, they experienced substantial reductions in LDL (low-density lipoprotein) or “bad” cholesterol and total cholesterol and increases in HDL (high-density lipoprotein) or “good” cholesterol, lower levels of inflammatory markers, and higher antioxidant activity.

2. It could help athletes

Many beverage companies are promoting hydrogen-infused water as a natural way of boosting athletic performance as it may reduce inflammation and impede the build-up of lactate in the blood — the primary cause of muscle fatigue.

A study comprising ten male soccer players found that those who consumed 1,500ml of hydrogen water decreased muscle fatigue from the lower levels of lactate after exercise compared to the placebo group.

Another small study involving eight male cyclists over a two-week period demonstrated that the group with 2 litres of hydrogen water per day produced greater power output on sprinting exercises than the group stuck with plain water.

3. Potential antioxidant benefits

Free radicals are unstable molecules in the body that play a part in oxidative stress, one of the major causes of inflammation and illnesses. Molecular hydrogen combats these free radicals and safeguards the cells from the effects of oxidative stress.

An eight-week study involving 49 participants undergoing radiation therapy for liver cancer had half of the group consume 1.5-2 litres of hydrogen water per day, and by the end of it, the members showed reduced levels of hydroperoxide (one of the markers of oxidative stress) and maintained higher antioxidant activity following radiation treatment compared to the control group.

Conclusion

As of now, the touted benefits of hydrogen-infused water certainly have their grounds. With hydrogen water generally recognised as safe for consumption by the FDA, there is definitely no harm in getting ahead of the crowd and realising the benefits as mentioned above today!
